Winter Reading: The Year 2000
I just found this old (1967) book on my bookshelf about predictions for the year 2000. It covers technological, political, social, and environmental changes that might occur between 1967 and the semi-near future of the year 2000. The year 2000 is now history, so reading the book now is like watching the new star wars prequel before the original with your own grandfather in a reverse time machine.
The book is weirdly accurate in many chapters. It is a little over-saturated with cold war mentality and spends a lot of time discussing potential post cold war scenarios. Some involve all out nuclear war, some do not.
The book basically predicts the creation of the internet and is very accurate with the technological predictions in general.
For Example: Lasers!
The formation of the European union, the introduction of the euro and the collapse of the US economy are also outlined in freaky detail. What's more interesting is the predictions about what will happen when the US starts to print more dollar bills and runs out of gold. You will have to read this book from 1967 or watch CNN to find out what happens. I won't reveal the secret future so easily.

Pictures from today on Galiano island.
Piece of grass near home |
Same grass. |
A bottle and a shoe from the old dump site behind our house. Lots of cool garbage that is up to 100 years old and nothing newer than 15 or 20 years. Mmmmm garbage. |
She grew some extra feathers for the cold. These Ameraucana chickens lay blue eggs. Her name is princess slowmo. |
Mulch now, eat later.
Do you like sweet tasty fruit?
Do you or someone you know have a fruit tree in your yard?
If you answered yes to those questions then you need mulch. Mulch early, mulch often. Seaweed makes an excellent mulch to add around the base of your trees before the deep winter frost sets in. I like to use kelp, as it contains over 70 nutrients that can be used by the tree. These nutrients are chelated, which means they are soluble in water and can be more easily absorbed by the root system. Aim for about six inches of mulch material around the base of each tree in a 4-6 foot wide ring. This will dissolve over the winter and spring, giving your trees protection and a dose of nitrogen and a wide range of micro-nutrients and macro-nutrients. Give it a try and you will be happy with the results next fall. Make sure to water the trees in the summer and apply my organic fertilizer tea during the growing season. You will have big tasty apples in the fall.

Rib Recipe. Top secret, but you can use it.
This is a template to create your own personalized rib masterpiece.
Follow these guidelines and you will get amazing results every time. Of course, there is lots of room for experimentation, so you can find the best combination to suit your tastes. I like to do several racks at the same time, and then season with different sauces at the final stage to give some variety to the meal.
Here is the procedure:
Gather your ingredients and cooking utensils. You will need.
Now that you have everything together, get your sleeves rolled up and get out the meat. You will want to remove the thin membrane that is on the ribs before coating them liberally with your spice rub. If you have a propane BBQ, turn only one side on and let it heat up on the lowest setting with the lid closed. You are aiming for around 225 Fahrenheit. Place the rubbed ribs on the grill that is not turned on. Leave them in this indirect heat for 2-3 hours, turning frequently and making sure the ribs are not getting too hot. This will help seal in all the flaours and make a nice exterior to the rib. Now is when we start cheating and save about 10 hours in cooking time.
Take the ribs off the bbq and place in the pyrex dishes. Add the honey to coat all the ribs then pour in the apple juice. Cover these dishes with tinfoil and bake for 45 minutes on 350-375Farenheit in the oven.
Take off the foil and savour the aroma! You are almost ready to eat. Just one more step....
Now you must crank up the BBQ to high and leave the lid open. Take the ribs out of the dishes and coat with BBQ sauce and grill for 5 min per side. Don't burn the BBQ sauce. You have put a lot of work into these ribs and you shouldn't burn them now!
Remove from heat and let them rest under a tinfoil tent while you get out the wine and put out the side dishes.

I like to do several racks at the same time, and then season with different sauces at the final stage to give some variety to the meal.
Here is the procedure:
Gather your ingredients and cooking utensils. You will need.
- Pork ribs, 3-4 full racks, 4-5lbs uncooked total weight.
- Salt (regular salt, celery salt, onion salt, garlic salt, or any combo of these) 1/4 cup total
- Spices (a good base mix is 3 parts chili powder, 1 part paprika, 1 part mustard powder, 1 part thyme, and 1 part garlic powder) 1/4 cup total
- sugar (half brown, half white) 1/4 cup total
- Combine salt, sugar and spices together to make your customized spice rub. Keep the proportions about 1/3 salt, 1/3 sugars, 1/3 spices and herbs. This rub will be the flavour base of the ribs. The salt and sugar help create a barrier that will keep the ribs moist and tasty.
- 2 cups of the best apple juice you can find. Or get out the juicer and make your own.
- half a cup of honey or maple syrup.
- 1 cup of your favorite bbq sauce. You can also make your own. There are lots of recipes out there and I'm sure you can scrape out some jam jars and add some thai chili sauce, and some cloves of garlic and bring to a boil and simmer. Or go for the bullseye
- 1 or two Pyrex baking dishes.

Champion Gardeners.
These are some hefty yields. Here is a recipe for my homemade organic, super-charged, bio-dynamic, fish and sea-weed fertilizer.
- Get two buckets or containers with lids.
- Fill one bucket half way full with seaweed. Kelp is best!
- Add straw or wood chips to the other bucket, about one quarter full. These will absorb the odours from the FISH, you will be adding.
- Let the two buckets stew independently for 2-3 days, stirring a few times.
- The seaweed will dissolve to a gooey mess quickly because there is no cellulose to slow the composting process. The fish will dissolve into the straw forming a thick paste. Now you mix the two buckets together and add water until 4 inches below the top of the bucket.
- Let this brew for 3-4 more days. Stir as often as possible, or aerate with an electric pump. If you keep it oxygenated more GOOD bacteria will grow and supercharge your tea.
- After step 6 your fertilizer will be ready to go. Just dilute it 4 to 1 with water. (4 parts water, one part tea) and apply to your vegetable, flower, or fruit garden. It can be sprayed directly on plants to speed absorption of nutrients or used as a root drench.

Headlamps!
These are flashlights that mount on your head and are very useful. I always wear mine for chopping wood and checking on the chickens at night. Great Christmas gifts too, ranging in price from 10-40 dollars. The new LED models have longer battery life, more lumens, and are lighter than older headlamps. Headlamps

Poached eggs. Picture of Deer at night. Very Very Good Eggs. Funny Jokes. Pope Benedict. Soft eggs. Lots of Hollandaise. What the Heck. >>>>>>>>>>>..........................33333.2.....................1?
Martha knows her eggs. This method involves no vinegar and only careful rolling of the egg edge with your spoon over onto the yolk, like folding the edges of a jellyfish onto the center. You get the idea, and if you don't go google Martha and her video. I'm not bothering to post it!
The eggs were very good.
